Reddit dark streets & darker secrets12/15/2023 ![]() With Help and Special Abilities, I see Action Rolls consistently rolled with 5-6 dice and this is only after about a ten sessions. PCs get too strong as Action Rating and Resistance rolls get to 3-4 Maybe the game just requires Players to go against the mechanics, but the point of mechanics in Blades in the Dark inspired (FitD) and Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) games are to reinforce the genre. In fact, Characters who optimize (playing as more of a SWAT team than Scoundrels) save Stress and don't generate Heat are rewarded - they get to use Downtime Activities and Coin on fun Long Term Projects. Sure, XP for Desperate Actions helps get Players to push forward in harrowing situations, but nobody I've played with wants to Trauma Out (except for the first one for a sweet source of XP). You hit those roleplay focused XP triggers and fall in love with the PC. And the game makes us get attached as they quickly improve and get cool abilities. We are talking about novels and shows where the Characters are so key to the story, especially in Space Opera. And really when we look at Touchstones, these aren't Game of Thrones characters. I don't see anyone seeing the Crew (and especially not the Ship) as the main character. Few Players in my experience really come into this game wanting to see their Character die. Perma-death/retirement of your Character is plenty reason to completely go against this style. Its Space Opera hack, Scum & Villainy (S&V) is my favorite TTRPG and I have loved running a campaign, but that is why the flaws (all of course IME) in BitD and S&V really hurt the experience because so much else is great.ĭisincentivizes the Player goal of "daring, bold, ambitious, and ready to take big chances to live a bigger life" ![]() Blades in the Dark (BitD) was my introduction to more narrative style games and it remains one of my favorites.
